Thank you Richard! This 2009 series honors the Iron Age site of Mapungubwe (Hill of the Jackal). A major trading centre at its zenith, Mapungubwe was occupied from 900-1300 CE. With cooler and drier climatic conditions it was abandoned for Great Zimbabwe in the North. While these stamps show beautiful artifacts they are not representative of the site. The gold bowl, rhinoceros and scepter are all grave goods from one individual. They were carved from wood and overlaid with gold foil.
