Amphitheatres

Thank you Ivan! This 2010 stamp is of the Samnite Theatre in Pietrabbondante. Following in Samnite tradition, it was built elevated with vast views of the countryside. The theatre, a temple and arcaded shops were constructed of limestone in the late 2nd century BCE with excavations beginning in the 1840s. The faunal remains from the temple show a preference for cattle, a high status item. Elsewhere at this site pig, sheep and wild species were more common.
