Newgrange

Part of a 1977 set celebrating the centenary of the National Museum and Library. The museum writes that this petroglyph covered stone, '...is from a destroyed passage tomb from a cemetery at Newgrange, Co. Meath. It is currently used in a reconstructed passage tomb on display in the museum.'
Thank you Nora for this postcard.
Thank you Doreen! Postcard of the 3,300-2,800 BCE delicately carved flint Knowth Macehead from a Newgrange chamber tomb. 8cm long, and thought to be ceremonial, the hole likely held the wood handle.
The macehead on stamp from the '100 Objects' series, with others in the set here. Issued January 12 2017.
