Segobriga

Thank you David! This is the second annual 'Ancient Cultures' issue and it features the Roman town of Segobriga (Victory Fortress), now archaeological park. Built over a Celtiberian fort, the city has an amphitheater (seen in the background) which was completed in 79 CE. A bust of Agrippina Major (Caligula's mom) is on left.
Owing in part to its success, was the nearby mining of lapis specularis (selenite) for use in windows and other decoration. The 100ish year mining boom became bust when sheet glass was invented.
Issue date: September 23, 2015

Comments

  1. The city is Segobriga (no Sebobiga), and the mineral is gypsum (selenite), and no Mica.
